Being in a road traffic accident with an uninsured or hit-and-run driver might feel like a lost cause, with no recourse available. However, there is still some hope. You may still have a path to compensation through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB).

Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) helps road users in the North East of England

The MIB was established in 1946 to compensate those injured in accidents involving uninsured or untraced vehicles. To fulfil this role, it runs three separate schemes. Its funding comes from a portion of every insured driver’s premium, estimated at around £30 per year.

It serves people all over the UK, including the North East of England.

The Uninsured Drivers Scheme provides a route to compensation for those involved in accidents caused by drivers without valid insurance. While proving liability remains essential, once established, the scheme allows victims to claim damages.

The MIB upholds the principle that innocent parties should not bear the consequences of another driver’s failure to comply with the law. If someone neglects their legal duty to have insurance, it should not prevent you from seeking justice. This protection extends beyond just drivers as it also covers pedestrians, passengers and property owners affected by the incident.

The Untraced Drivers Scheme applies when a driver involved in a road traffic accident leaves the scene without providing their details. This could result in other road users sustaining injuries. Failing to stop after an accident is a criminal offence and Cleveland Police may investigate the incident.

In some cases, the driver or vehicle may later be identified. If not, the Untraced Drivers Scheme offers a potential route to compensation.

The Green Card Scheme applies to accidents caused by foreign motorists. In most cases, these drivers are fully insured, even if they are using a hire vehicle while visiting the UK. However, if no valid insurance policy is in place, the MIB may be able to provide compensation.
