If a person lacks the ability to make decisions for themselves in relation to their financial affairs or health or welfare decisions, then it may become necessary for those people closest to them to apply for a court order. The court order may appoint those people as deputies, to make decisions in the future on behalf of that person. This process is often undertaken when there is no power of attorney in place and it is not possible for the person to make a power of attorney for themselves.
