Family Law

When you encounter personal problems within your family, whether because of a relationship breakdown or perhaps about a dispute concerning your children, not only is this a very worrying and stressful time for you, such problems also result in many complex legal issues.

Naturally, you need an adviser who has detailed legal knowledge, but just as importantly, you need an adviser who will adopt an understanding approach to your case. The team at Askews combines relevant expertise and experience in the law with a commitment to reduce the stress caused to you and your family as far as possible.

Through our network of contacts, we can also refer you (where appropriate) to other agencies within the community, such as Relate or Family Mediation.

Our team can support you with a range of personal and family issues, for example:

  • Relationship breakdown (whether you’re married or not)
  • Divorce
  • Separation
  • Financial settlements
  • Property disputes
  • Maintenance
  • Pension provision
  • Domestic violence (including injunctions where you are threatened with, or are the victim of domestic violence)
  • Disputes concerning children, for example residence and contact disputes, social services involvement and care proceedings, emergency orders, adoptions - including foreign adoptions and step parent adoptions, international disputes concerning children.

What Will It Cost?

You may be financially eligible to receive Public Funding (formerly ‘Legal Aid’). At Askews, we hold a Pubic Funding Franchise for this type of work, so we can help you with the forms and in obtaining any funding that you’re entitled to.

If you need to personally pay for some or all of your legal fees, you can talk to us about arranging a sensible payment plan that you can afford. With Askews, you’ll have a number of options for example: credit card, standing order or credit agreement.

Regardless of how you are paying, we will be open and up front about how much things are likely to cost. We’ll give you an initial estimate of costs and will tell you straight away if anything happens to change this estimate. We will always check with you before taking any specific action (such as going to Court) which could significantly affect the amount you may need to pay.

Why Should I Choose Askews?

We make sure that our Family team has the expertise and experience that you need, and then continue to invest in their training and development to make sure that the advice you receive is always up-to-date. As testament to the high calibre of our staff we have Solicitors who are members of Resolution (formerly the Solicitor’s Family Law Association).

In addition we hold a Public Funding Franchise in matrimonial and family work as confirmation of the fact that we can provide a high quality service to our clients.

We will listen very carefully to your needs and advise you fully as to your legal options, entitlement and available legal solutions to your concerns.

Whilst we will work hard to resolve your problems as quickly and sympathetically as possible sometimes it is necessary to go to Court. Rest assured that our Solicitors are experienced Court Advocates and will be there for you to represent your interest in any Court proceedings.

We know that many people’s experience of dealing with solicitors is one of frustration, lack of communication and worry. However, at Askews, we are committed to delivering a personal, friendly service to all our clients and we will keep you regularly informed about what’s going on.
